SOAR WV is a Charleston, WV based community group that promotes the health, dignity, and voices of individuals who are impacted by drug use. Together, we’ve distributed over 33,000 naloxone doses since COVID-19.
SOAR WV was created in 2018, in response to the politically motivated shut down of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department’s harm reduction program. We’ve worked since then to fill the crater losing this program has left in our community.
We’ve hosted dozens of town halls, cultural events, and health fairs to challenge stigma and save lives.
Ongoing SOAR WV efforts include:
- Regular naloxone distribution (over 300 doses/month, focused on reaching people most at risk of overdose)
- Monthly mutual aid meetings
- Monthly community cleanups (Unstuck Chuck)
- Coordination of a free 24/7 access naloxone vending machine at Charleston’s Unitarian Universalist Congregation
- Installation and maintenance of two (of three) of Charleston’s syringe disposal boxes
In 2021, SOAR WV was also a founding partner of Mountain State Harm Reduction.
